How to stop comparing yourself to others

How to stop comparing yourself to others

Life is all about becoming the best version of yourself, and you can never be the best version of yourself if you spend your life comparing yourself to others. When you compare yourself to others, you look at their strengths against your weaknesses. For example relatives, people who surround us, such as relatives, co-workers, siblings, and friends have their own lives to think about. When you compare yourself to others, you are creating a life that will lead to bitterness, jealousy and unhappiness.

God created us in His image and likeness, we are like God, but we are unique and different from each other. In the Bible, there’s not even one character whose path is the same as that of another.

This shows that even our paths cannot be the same as those of others. We only live once, and we cannot waste it comparing ourselves to others. Here are some practical ways to help you not to compare yourself to others.

Love yourself

Loving and accepting yourself the way you were created is vital in avoiding comparison with other people. People who do not love themselves end up hating their lives and desiring that of others.

Loving yourself is not a bad thing as some put it. Some believe that it is a sign of pride, but that is not the case if it is done correctly. Self love is also mentioned in the Bible, where Jesus tells people to love their neighbors as they love themselves.

Work towards attaining your goals

Achieving the goals you have set for yourself is a significant step. The first step to achieve your goals is to set realistic goals. When you set your goals, you have to work hard and make sure you achieve them.

God knows that we have plans, and in the Bible, He says that we should commit our plans to Him. There will be no room for comparison when you are busy working towards achieving your goals.

Celebrate your achievements

After achieving your goals, you have to celebrate your achievements. Celebrating can be done in the form of giving thanks to God. No matter how small your achievements are, you should celebrate them. When you don’t celebrate your achievements, you may complain, and compare yourself to other people you think have achieved bigger things in life.

Choose your friends wisely

Friends matter in a person s life. Some friends will help you become the best you can be, but others will lead you to the wrong path. Some friends will make you believe in yourself, while others will make you feel that you have nothing to be proud of. The Bible talks about bad company ruins good morals.

Ask for God’s will upon your life

God will always lead you towards the right direction. He has a purpose for your life, and He created you with an assignment to fulfill.

We must follow what God wants from us, or else we will continue following other people’s paths and admiring what they have achieved in life.

Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in your mother’s womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.”

Forgive yourself

In this life, we all make mistakes.  We all fall, and sin at one point or another. We are not perfect, and no one is. People are always emphasizing the need to forgive others, but it is rare to hear someone emphasizing the need to forgive oneself.

Make it a habit to forgive yourself every time you make a mistake or do not meet the goals you had set for yourself, as this will help you avoid comparing yourself with others.

Forget your past

Forget all the mistakes and the expectations of the past. Some people hold on to their failures in the past so much that it makes it hard for them to move on.

Staying in the past for too long will limit you from enjoying the blessings of the present. No matter how dark your past is, you should let it go and move on.

Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell in the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Count your blessings

Appreciate and be grateful for what you have and work towards getting what you don’t have. Write every blessing that you have in your heart.

When you begin the journey of counting your blessings, you will realize that you have more than you deserve.

Be contented

Being satisfied with what you have is mandatory if you are going to be happy in this life. This is because we cannot have everything in this life. We can only have what we can handle or manage.

God knows what is best for you and what is not. He reveals His plans when deems most appropriate. Humans, however, tend to rush to acquire wealth and status in a society that do not befit them.

The Bible also talks about being contented in Philippians 4:11-not that I speak from want, for I have learnt to be content in whatever circumstances I am.

Have the right friends on social media

Social media is all over the world. Some people on social media tend not to live their lives. They hide the negative side of their lives and show you only the positive side. Comparing yourself to the people on social media is very easy since they bring out what is good and leave out what is bad. Get the right friends on social media and let go of the ones you think are faking their lives for fame.

Conclusion

If you compare yourself with others you will be bitter and unhappy for the rest of your life. You can only live your life and nobody else’s life. Start believing in yourself and commit your plans to God, and He will show you the way. Remember that you are a unique being, different from all the other people created with a purpose. The only person you should compare yourself to is you.
